“Duality in gold” Dualidad en oro | Oil and gold foil on French canvas | 89.9 cm x 180 cm | Year 2020

Belarmino Miranda Montoya (1966 – Medellín Colombia), for more than thirty years as a visual artist he has made various series in which the starting point has been the body as a symbol of the sublime, the spiritual and the human. To achieve this, he has expressed himself through drawing and painting, although in recent works, he has included various materials in his work to generate new visual experiences in the viewer.
Review
In the 1990s, the works of Belarmino Miranda emerged in Colombia and with rapid acceptance in international circles, a work that has the power to firmly root us in the present, while allowing us a reunion with the history of art; fortunate synthesis that makes it suggestive and full of connotations.
Although a first glance seems to indicate that all the expressive and symbolic load of his paintings is concentrated in the communion that can be perceived in them, the nudity of the female bodies and the landscape.
We discover a little more attentive to his trajectory, that this recurrence of symbolic elements also occurs in his interior paintings (perhaps somewhat warmer and less dense), in which the presence of children and women crowned with faint halos and crowns brought of ancient flower ceremonies, they suggest golden ages increasingly distant from ours, in which the power of the outside world does not succeed, however, to extinguish these subtle manifestations of the spirit.
Miranda manages to give us, through the meticulous recreation of the intimate moments of a placid feminine bath, a breath of the poetics of the memory of the origin, using elements as simple as the meeting of women’s skin and water, in those that the seasoned observer can attend representations that, despite being performed in contemporary settings that would otherwise seem prosaic to us, manage to convey to us, touched by a nostalgic sense of the sacred, the emotion and the beauty contained in the perpetuation of a ancient ritual.
