Patrick Tresset is a French artist and scientist living in London. He studies artistic activity and the relationships we have with machines, especially with robots.

As part of his artistic practice, Patrick uses what he calls “clumsy robotics” to create autonomous entities, cybernetic representations of the artist and in a way his own representation.

Its robots are based on cutting-edge technologies using the results of research in computer science, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing.


Patrick Tresset is a Brussels based artist who develops theatrical installations with robotic agents as actors. Tresset’s installations use computational systems that aim to introduce artistic, expressive and obsessive aspects to robots’ behaviour. These systems are influenced by research into human behaviour, more specifically how humans make marks, depict other humans, how we perceive artworks and relate to robots.

Tresset also uses robots and autonomous computational systems to investigate the drawings and painting practice. Tresset’s work has been internationally exhibited in association with major museums such as The Grand Palais (Paris), The Pompidou Center (Paris), Prada foundation (Milan), Tate Modern (London), Museum of Israel (Jerusalem), Victoria & Albert Museum (London), MMCA (Seoul), BOZAR (Brussels) and at events such as Ars Electronica, Update_5, BIAN Originally a painter, Tresset is part of a generation of artists coming out of Goldsmiths’ College (London) computing department.

In 2004 Tresset joined Goldsmiths for an MSc degree in Arts Computing where from 2009 until 2012 he co-directed the AIkon-II project, he holds an MPhil in Arts and technology. Since 2018 he is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Canberra in Australia. Tresset has published research papers in the fields of computational aesthetics, social robotics, drawing research and AI.

Human study # 1 by Patrick Tresset is a performative art installation with (1,3 or 5) RNP robots as actors and a human person. The human subject is passive, an object of curiosity and study for robotic beings.

RNPs are robots designed to draw pictures from life. Their behavior has developed to react to visual data by making gestures that follow a strategy similar to that used by the artist when he was a painter. While the robot’s drawing technique is inspired by Tresset himself, the drawing style is influenced by the robot’s characteristics, qualities, and limitations. Tresset’s work with robots allows him to investigate the practice of drawing and, at the same time, experiment with the theatricality of the relationship that human beings have with machines.
